General Info about the Michigan Pops Choir  E-mail

The Michigan Pops Choir was founded in January 2009 as a sponsored program of the wonderful Chelsea Center for the Arts (CCA).

We perform a fun, challenging repertoire of popular music, generally (though not exclusively) of music written since 1900 in the pop and jazz genres.

We're a mixed (male & female) choir. For the 2010 season, we have ten members: two basses, three tenors, two altos, and three sopranos. Artistic direction is provided by Jeff Prenevost, assisted by Lester Castellana on the piano and David Bloom, assistant director. Back office operations are handled by the CCA, which also provides us with our rehearsal facilities. Our webmaster is Kathy McGuire.

Rehearsal scheduling for non-professional performers always poses a challenge. While always subject to change, the MPC currently rehearses from 8:30 - 10:30 am each Saturday, and often (not always) on Thursdays, 6:30 - 8:30 pm. All rehearsals are mandatory. Dues, primarily to help defray the costs of sheet music purchase and some marketing expenses, are $100 per year.

For the 2010 season, our primary performance focus is "Cabaret Chelsea", a series of seven "show-parties" which the MPC is both hosting and headlining, to be held at the historic Chelsea Depot, running from Jan. 22 with "The Cool Show", and concluding with "The Holiday Spectacular Spectacular" on Dec. 31, 2010. See http://michiganpopschoir.org/cabaretchelsea/ for all the details.
